WE WON UNION SECURITY!

Yesterday, the University and the GSU bargaining committee settled on a strong union security agreement.  This agreement means that all graduate workers will become dues-paying members of the union, or else pay an “agency fee” to GSU-UE. This is a monumental win  which entails unity amongst graduate workers and the long-term stability of our organization. The language we won constitutes a veritable gold standard for graduate student unions. Union security gives us the power to take on the University, enforce our contract, and make this workplace more fair, more organized, and more ready to win even more in the next contract.

With union security settled, we can focus our organizing to win real protections against discrimination and raises, benefits, and material support for international students.

Major win, major takeaway: organizing gets the goods. This win is a direct result of grad worker organizing. For the past four months, organizers have campaigned diligently on this issue which will lay a foundation for the long future of labor’s power at UChicago. Now is the time to organize in full force to achieve a historic first contract. There has never been a more exciting time to organize with GSU.
